David Harrell's one-act play: A Little Potato and Hard to Peel

September 22, 2011 - 7 p.m. (Thursday)
David Harrell was born without a right hand. His warm, smart, and engaging autobiographical one-man show, A Little Potato and Hard to Peel, is not so much a show about living with a disability, but about the universal experience of overcoming any obstacle. Using humor, candor, and 80s pop culture references, David shares his heartwarming story. This play has been performed in New York (off-Broadway) and in various theatres around the country. As Martin Denton, from nytheatre.com states, "...letting us walk with him in his shoes during this hour-long show is edifying and illuminating. He excels at sharing, at helping his audience explore and feel some of what he has been through. I think we’re all of us better for that sharing.” Appropriate for all ages. Approximate running time: 60 minutes.

Constitution Day

U.S. Constitution Day is September 17, celebrate with us by pausing for a few minutes to refresh your knowledge and appreciation for the United States' most important legal document. Over the next two weeks, you will receive a daily e-mail that includes the posting of a part of the Constitution and a link to a website where you will find an exercise to reinforce your knowledge of the Constitution.

What: Write-a-Thon*
When: Tuesday, September 27, 4:30-6:30pm*
Where: The Writing Center (LRC 214)
Why: To see if you can go the distance! To write as much as you can!

FAQ:
*Participants will be provided with writing challenges from various genres.
*Participants may write for the full two hours or just drop in to write when they can.
*Prizes will be awarded to the writers who endure the most!

Note: This is a great way to get ready for our Open Mike Night on Tuesday, October 25th and our November Writing Contest.

Lighting of the Tree in the Plaza

Please plan to attend the 3rd Annual RCC Tree Lighting in the Plaza this Wednesday, December 1, at 5:30 p.m. The handbell choir of Marlboro Friends Meeting will entertain us with the sounds of the season; holiday cider, cocoa, and cookies will be served. The event will conclude with the official lighting of the tree and caroling in the plaza.

Uwharrie Dreams Writing Contest

Uwharrie Dreams Writing Club is pleased to announce the 2010 Fall Writing contest. Authors of all genres are invited to enter your original nonacademic short fiction, SciFi, personal memoir, poetry, or nonfiction piece for a chance to be recognized

among your peers and compete for a prize.

All entries will be judged by Uwharrie Dreams’ faculty judging panel. Winners will be notified via email and announced publicly. Winning authors will be invited to read their entries at future Uwharrie Dreams events.

Please submit only original unpublished manuscripts. Entries are accepted until

November 30, 2010.

If you plan on transferring to a four-year college or university, stop by theCollege Fair on Thursday, Nov. 11, from 8:30-10 a.m. in the Student Services Center lounge on the Asheboro Campus of RCC to get information speak with representatives from a variety of colleges.

Colleges represented will include Catawba College, East Carolina University, Fort Hays State University, Guilford College, John Wesley College, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, Pfeiffer University, Queens University, Salem College, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and Winston-Salem State University.

Construction in the Plaza

The Student Services Center and the plaza area will soon be under construction. While under construction, a section of the plaza will be closed. There will be directional signs in place to direct students, faculty, and staff to the areas they need to go.

Spanish Proficiency Exam Information

SPA proficiency exams will be given in HSC 103 on the following days:

Thursday, January 6 at 6:30 pm

Friday, January 7 at 9:00 am

The following proficiencies will be given:

SPA 111, SPA 112, SPA 211, SPA 212

If you would like to take a proficiency test, you need to sign-up for the desired day/time on the bulletin board outside of AE 107A. In order to take the exam, you need to have registered and paid for the course.

On the day of the exam, you will need to bring a picture ID, a receipt showing you paid for the course and pencils to complete the test.

Writing Workshops--for fun!

Uwharrie Dreams, the writing club, will be hosting two WRITING WORKSHOPS.

Come join other writers in an hour or so of low-risk writing in a laid-back environment. This is chance to work on fiction, non-fiction or poetry for yourself. No grades. No requirements. Just writing for the sake of writing.

Faculty Spotlight: Teresa Cox

When she is out of the classroom, instructor Teresa Cox runs, runs, and runs some more. "I love it when it rains particularly. Something about running in puddles with dirt and mulch flying up on the back of my legs is awesome. I truly love it."

Last week, she took her PED 111 hybrid class out to the Birkhead Wilderness to run the trails up to the top of Birkhead Mountain. "My thoughts are that by exposing people to things that they may never have thought of doing, you might find something that 'rocks their boat' for life."

Faculty Spotlight: Clark Adams

Perhaps you've taken a class with Clark Adams for English or Communications, but here are some things that might surprise you about Mr. Adams. He has an extensive record collection of music from the 1890s-present.
While a student at UNCG, Mr. Adams was a DJ on the campus radio station, playing rhythm and blues for his fellow Spartans. His love of music dates back to the age of 4, when he first began to "bang around" on a guitar, with formal lessons starting soon after. Now, he plays both guitar and piano.

Mr. Adams comes from a long line of educators and is passionate about the mission of the Community College. His great-grandfather taught in a one-room school (grades 1-11) in the early 1900s in Taylorsville, North Carolina. His grandfather, W. H. Adams, Sr., taught vocational agriculture at Harmony High School, Maiden High School, North Cove High School, and Bunker Hill High School in North Carolina from 1935-1974. And his father, Dr. Bill Adams, has worked in education since 1965 and has worked in the NC Community College System since 1969.

Art in the Park September 14

Please stop by Art in the Park in the Azalea Gardens (near the bookstore) on Tuesday, September 14, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. to see the artwork and demonstrations of local artisans and crafters. There will be items for sale, but the event is free of charge. This is the first event of the 2010-2011 Cultural Arts Series at RCC. RCC Launches use of Second Life in Online Class

You may have heard about a psychology class being taught in Second Life. What is Second Life, you ask? It is an online virtual world where every citizen is an avatar character who can walk and talk and fly. The psychology class meets in a virtual classroom in a treetop and we take field trips to a replica of a brain, to a dream museum, and to many other interesting places.

The NC educational system is investing resources in building a virtual campus with offices, classrooms, tribal villages, sailing ships, a Shakespearean theater and other interesting locations. The educational possibilities are endless. I am so excited to be teaching in this new environment. We use Moodle as a home base and then we meet once a week to discuss psychology.

If you need General Psychology and enjoy online social interaction or gaming, you might enjoy the Second Life class. Look for it on the spring schedule and maybe even a couple more Second Life classes in other areas.

Mrs. Sue Shelton awarded for Excellence in Teaching

Sue Shelton, Math Instructor and Program Coordinator for Mathematics, was recognized at convocation in August for receiving the Excellence in Teaching Award. Mrs. Shelton has a reputation with students as being tough but fair. Her passion for teaching and her commitment to students is evident not only in the classroom, but in the out-of-class help she frequently provides.
